Field Hockey: More than a Game

By Katie Calvo

The Riverside field hockey team is made up of a special group of students, athletes, and leaders. The 19 players were undeniably committed, waking up before the sun for their 6:20 morning practices. Without much success on the scoreboard, the senior leadership kept the team positive and created a fun and welcoming environment. Senior captains Kiyo Takahashi and Mimi Haase are not only exceptional leaders on the field, they are also incredibly involved in the Riverside community. In the midst of college applications, they managed to balance a sport, challenging engineering and AP classes, and leadership in many extracurricular activities. Kiyo and Mimi took the values of commitment, teamwork, and positivity that embodied their success as leaders on the field and translated them to their leadership and achievements at school.

Thank you to the entire Riverside field hockey team and Coach Jones for allowing me the freedom to photograph the games and the team. Thank you to Kiyo and Mimi for letting me follow you around at school and become your "personal photographer." I loved getting to know you both and I know you will do great things. I'll be rooting for you!
